The 2022 season is drawing to a close and the first boats are making the often long journey to winter storage. In this issue, we report on a transfer from Werder an der Havel to Hamburg. Conclusion after a week of canal travel across five northern German states: autumn is still an excellent time to travel by boat, often even more relaxed than in the high season due to short waiting times in front of locks and lifts.
However, shorter days and longer nights are also the time for thieves. Theft rates increase in autumn and we wanted to find out how to effectively protect small outboard motors, for example on dinghies. The sobering result of our practical test: nobody can expect one hundred per cent security anyway, but if more than half of the locks we tested can be easily picked in less than three minutes, something is wrong. Read our colleague Ole Puls' test to find out which product performed best and what you should bear in mind when buying one.
The last part of our series is all about good seamanship. We show you how to handle lines and mooring lines and what tricks and tips there are to make life on board easier and safer.
