The safety of crew and boat is one of the most elementary tasks of every skipper. It starts with simple items of equipment such as life jackets and ends with the knowledge and experience of the skipper. Our colleague Jill Grigoleit accompanied a training cruise by rescuers from the German Maritime Search and Rescue Service (DGzRS) and shows in her report how professionals prepare for emergencies and what we pleasure boaters can learn from them.
One of the worst-case scenarios is a fire on board. Our colleague Ole Puls explains how you can protect yourself against a fire in the engine compartment. He describes how automatic fire extinguishing systems work, which boats they are suitable for and explains the different systems. This much in advance: extinguishing systems do not necessarily have to be expensive and are not only reserved for large yachts.
The travel section of this issue deals with a charter cruise through the south of France and the so-called Holsteiner Runde. Part 1 starts in Brunsbüttel, follows the Kiel Canal to Kiel and ends in the Bay of Lübeck. A cruise through northern Germany could hardly be more varied.
