In Lingen, two ship fires within a few days caused a stir and a major police and fire brigade operation. Investigations are currently focussing on the background and the exact course of events.

Two people were injured in a fire on a motor yacht in the harbour of Lingen on Saturday afternoon (7 March). According to initial findings, the fire broke out during cleaning work on board. While trying to extinguish the flames themselves, two people suffered injuries and had to be taken to hospital. The alerted fire brigade arrived with emergency services and was eventually able to bring the fire under control and extinguish it. The ship sustained material damage. The waterway police have started an investigation into the exact cause of the fire.

Second ship fire in Lingen

Major alarm on Thursday afternoon (26 February) in Lingen: Numerous emergency services were deployed to the Old Harbour under the emergency keyword "F3 - fire on ship - a boat is said to be on fire, lying in the harbour". In addition to the fire brigades from Lingen and Altenlingen, the DLRG and divers from Meppen also made their way to the scene. However, when the first emergency services arrived, the all-clear was given - it was not a ship in the harbour basin that was on fire, but a boat lying on land. The interior was already on fire. According to the findings, welding work was being carried out inside, which could have started the fire.

Population also affected

Due to the heavy smoke, the police informed the public that smoke was drifting towards the city centre. Residents were asked to keep windows and doors closed and to avoid the area around the harbour. The fire brigade immediately initiated extensive extinguishing measures. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus gained access to the ship. Additional firefighters were escorted inside via a hatch in order to fight the fire in a targeted manner. Although most of the interior was made of wood, the firefighters managed to quickly bring the fire under control.
