At IBEX 2026 in Tampa, Mercury Marine unveiled its new Vessel Interface Module (VIM) – a configurable solution that intelligently connects propulsion systems with other on-board systems.

As modern boats become increasingly complex, so too does the risk of interference between key on-board systems. The new VIM addresses this challenge by connecting Mercury propulsion systems to an integrated logic unit, as well as to sensors and digital switching technologies – thereby preventing potentially harmful interactions before they occur.

Sensors make it possible

Using sensors fitted throughout the boat, the system monitors the status of all connected components and can automatically deactivate selected propulsion functions if a condition could lead to damage. A practical example: if a swim platform remains extended, VIM automatically locks the engine trim – and only releases it once the platform has been safely retracted.

“With the Vessel Interface Module, Mercury propulsion systems become an active part of the boat’s safety system,” explains Will Nicklas, Senior Category Manager for Controls and Rigging at Mercury Marine. “It helps to protect the equipment on board whilst offering boaters a seamless experience.”

The VIM supports a wide range of sensors, can be integrated into leading digital switch platforms and emits audible warning signals. Clear on-screen messages are also displayed via Mercury SmartCraft Connect. Typical applications include swim platforms, ladders, trolling motors, windlasses and water ski masts.

Delivery of the Vessel Interface Module is expected to begin before the end of 2026.
