Mercury Racing is expanding its range of high-performance outboard engines with a new 15-inch heavy-duty CMS (Conventional Midsection). The more compact midsection has been specially developed for the 200R, 300R and the pure racing engines 200 ROS and 300 ROS. The new design is aimed at owners of high-speed catamarans and racing boats.
The new 15-inch midsection is based on experience from offshore racing and offers several technical improvements over conventional designs. The reinforced components include a forged bracket that is significantly more resilient than cast versions, solid motor mounts for better vibration damping and a so-called single-ram trim system that enables more precise adjustments and a revised shaft.
The shorter design lowers the engine's centre of gravity, which has a positive effect on handling during fast cornering and in rough water. Despite the more compact design, full compatibility with Mercury control systems is maintained - both with digital DTS systems (Digital Throttle and Shift) and with conventional mechanical controls. The integration of SmartCraft technology also enables digital engine monitoring.
The Mercury Racing 200R is a 3.4-litre V6 engine designed for use with standard fuel (95 RON). It is particularly suitable for lighter high-performance boats and upgrade projects where a balance between power and weight is required.
The larger 300R with 4.6 litre V8 engine offers more power for heavier boats and higher speed requirements. This engine also runs on regular 95 RON fuel, making it much easier to operate than engines with racing petrol requirements.
For pure racing use, Mercury Racing has the 200 ROS and 300 ROS models in its programme. The 300 ROS is based on the 300R platform, but also has a factory-installed overwater exhaust, which improves the power output and provides the characteristic sound.
The smaller 200 ROS shares the heavy-duty midsection with the other models and was specially developed for Class 3 offshore racing. It offers particularly fast throttle response, which provides decisive advantages at race starts and when accelerating out of bends.
Availability and areas of application
The new 15-inch midsection for all four engine variants can be ordered from the end of 2025.
