Tohatsu, Japan's oldest and one of the world's largest outboard engine manufacturers, has announced a partnership with Ilmor Marine, a renowned marine engine and high performance engineering solutions company. More about their joint project

Tohatsu, one of the oldest and largest manufacturers of outboard engines from Japan, is now collaborating with the renowned marine engine and high-performance engineering solutions company Ilmor Marine. The aim of this co-operation is to develop a first-class range of electric outboard engines. Since 2001, Ilmor has become a leading supplier of marine propulsion systems, working with well-known brands such as MasterCraft, Formula and Aviara.

Tohatsu and Ilmor Marine have partnered to advance marine propulsion technology: The first engine in this new range will be a 6kW outboard with innovative features such as an integrated tilt and trim function and a gauge-style touchscreen. This electric outboard will be available in different shaft and propeller variants to suit different requirements.

Fulfilling customer needs

Isami Hyuga, President of Tohatsu Corporation, emphasises the importance of the partnership with Ilmor Engineering and stresses that the collaboration is aimed at meeting the needs of customers. Mike Lindberg, Vice President of Marine at Ilmor, describes the partnership as an opportunity to develop products that meet the expectations of boaters worldwide.

The new electric outboard engines, developed through the collaboration between Tohatsu and Ilmor, are expected to be launched in the US, Canada and Europe before the end of 2024. These innovations are expected to meet the growing demand for sustainable and efficient solutions in the marine industry.

Ole Puls was born in Schleswig in 1999. He quickly swapped the football pitch for the Schlei and grew up sailing a wide variety of dinghies and tall ships. From his grandfather's self-built wooden opti and a Europe to a 49er and an X362 Sport, there was a lot to choose from. After leaving school, Puls decided to train as a boat builder at the high-tech shipyard Knierim Yachtbau in Kiel in 2016. He successfully completed his training in 2020 and stayed at the shipyard as a bachelor. In 2022, he decided not only to build boats, but also to test them. Since then, he has been working for Delius Klasing Verlag in the Test & Technology section of BOOTE magazine. The training he received and the eye for detail and quality of workmanship he acquired help him immensely today. Even though he is a regatta sailor with heart and soul, he feels right at home on motorboats and enjoys separating his professional and private lives and yet combining them. Because we all know one thing: there is simply no better place to be than on the water.
