The newly founded shipyard Pioneer Yachts from Stralsund is launching the PY60, a 60-foot catamaran with solar-electric propulsion. The first model, named Pioneer One, is due to be unveiled at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September 2026. Founder Mike Frank wants to use the boat himself and utilise the operating data for further development.

Topics in this article

Pioneer Yachts is a new shipyard from Stralsund that specialises in solar-powered electric boats. Founder and managing director Mike Frank, an engineer from Bremen, realised that the perfect model for him did not yet exist. The son of a merchant shipping captain, he founded the meistro Energie Group 20 years ago, which operates photovoltaic parks in Germany. He is now transferring this expertise to boat building. The shipyard is located in the maritime cluster on the Baltic Sea and develops its boats according to the principle of clear system architecture and measurable performance.

Catamaran with German technology and Italian design

The PY60 is the shipyard's first model. The 60-foot catamaran combines exterior design and naval architecture by Cossutti & Ganz from Italy with interior design by Micheletti + Partners. The hulls are made in Germany. The boat is completely electrically powered and draws its energy exclusively from solar panels on the roof. According to the manufacturer, this combination should enable long-distance travel without an external power supply. The shipyard speaks of complete independence on the water thanks to the system's range.

Speeds

The PY60 reaches a maximum speed of 11 knots. The cruising speed is 7.5 knots. The first example bears the name Pioneer One and will become the property of founder Mike Frank. He wants to drive the boat himself and test it under real conditions. The operating data collected in the process will be incorporated into the development of further units. Frank explains that future boats are to be built for real use. This approach differs from standard development processes, in which prototypes often only run under test conditions. The shipyard favours continuous improvement through practical experience rather than theoretical planning alone.

Premiere in Cannes

Pioneer One is due to be launched in summer 2026. The world premiere is planned for the Cannes Yachting Festival from 8 to 13 September 2026. The boat will be presented to the public for the first time there. The shipyard has not announced whether further units have already been ordered or when series production will begin. Prices have also not yet been announced. Interested parties can contact the shipyard via the Sand People Communication press office.

Deputy Editor in Chief BOOTE

Ralf Marquard discovered his enthusiasm for boating on the tranquil Aller, first with inflatable boats and later with a 6-meter cabin cruiser. His electrical engineering studies at HAW Hamburg took him from the southern Heidekreis (Lower Saxony) to the Hanseatic city. Ralf Marquard has been working for the BOOTE editorial team since 1997, where he trained as a test editor. He tests both small inflatable boats and larger yachts. His personal boat is a 4.50 meter long, self-built wooden boat with a 50 hp outboard motor. In 2007, he was appointed deputy editor-in-chief at BOOTE.
