Internal combustion engine out, electric motor in: Italy is supporting the purchase of electric boat drives with a €3 million programme. Who can apply for the subsidy for electric drives and how it works

Adolfo Urso, Minister for "Enterprise and Made in Italy", has announced the implementation of the "Made in Italy" framework law (no. 206/2023) to promote ecological change in the leisure boating sector.

A key component is a purchase subsidy for electric drives. It applies to both motors (inboard and outboard) and batteries. For the current year, 3 million euros have been earmarked for the measure. Applications for the funding are submitted to the responsible ministry, and the status of the actual implementation can be found on its website. Website.

The subsidy for e-drives in detail

Private individuals can have a maximum of two engines subsidised, while shipyards and companies can also order larger quantities. The funding, which is granted in the form of a non-repayable grant and up to a maximum of 50% of the eligible expenditure, provides for an amount of up to 8,000 euros in the case of a "natural person" and up to 50,000 euros in the case of a company.

For outboard electric motors with an integrated battery with an output of at least 0.5 kW and up to 12 kW, the subsidy is limited to 2,000 euros. For outboard motors with an external battery, inboard motors, sterndrives or pod drives, the limit is 10,000 euros.

It is to be hoped that other European countries will also join in this pioneering promotion and thus further promote electrification on the water.
