From the end of 2025, Volvo Penta will be presenting a new range of fully electric drives based on the proven IPS system for work and leisure boats.

Volvo Penta is expanding its drive portfolio with an all-electric version of the successful IPS system (Inboard Performance System). The new E-series will initially be launched on the market for commercial boats and will later also be available for leisure boats. The manufacturer is thus promising a further step towards emission-free shipping.

Volvo Penta plans five drive variants

Volvo Penta is planning a total of five different electric IPS drives with outputs ranging from around 300 hp to 1500 hp per unit. The first model to be launched at the end of 2025 will be the IPS900E with a maximum of 515 kW (700 hp). This will be followed by the smaller IPS650E with up to 374 kW (509 hp).

Proven IPS advantages are retained

The electric drives utilise the same basic design as the conventional IPS systems. The electric motor drives the forward-facing propellers directly. These pull the boat through the water instead of pushing it. This should ensure greater efficiency and better handling. The electronic control system (EVC) with functions such as joystick manoeuvring or dynamic positioning is also retained.

Flexible energy supply

The manufacturer relies on a modular concept for the power supply. In addition to pure battery operation, hybrid variants are also possible. The manufacturer offers suitable generators for this. An energy management system is designed to ensure optimum efficiency. The driver can choose between different operating modes such as purely electric or hybrid at the control station.

Volvo Penta wants to work with specialised partner companies on system integration. In this way, components such as batteries, chargers and control units are to be optimally harmonised. The aim is to create a complete turnkey package for shipyards and boat builders.
