There are many reasons to switch from petrol engines to diesel engines. But what would motivate someone to swap a fully functional diesel engine for a smaller capacity diesel engine from another manufacturer?

We also asked our reader Thomas Schreiber this question when he told us about the idea of swapping his 4.2-litre MerCruiser diesel (220 hp), built in 2000, for a 3-litre V6 VW engine (265 hp), built in 2008.

Improved smooth running, less noise pollution, ease of servicing, lower weight, less space requirement and, last but not least, the expected fuel savings were cited as reasons.
