Mercury Marine presents a new 4.2-litre diesel engine that meets the RCD II emissions standard and will be available in the EU from March 2025.

Mercury Marine is expanding its range of boat engines with a new diesel engine that has been specially developed for the European market. The Mercury Diesel 4.2L fulfils the RCD II emissions standard (Recreational Craft Directive) and is available in two power levels: 270 hp (201 kW) and 320 hp (239 kW).

Technical details

The six-cylinder in-line engine with a displacement of 4.2 litres is equipped with a turbocharger and intercooler. The common rail fuel system with digitally controlled injection valves enables precise tuning of the air-fuel ratio. This is intended to improve acceleration, top speed and efficiency as well as reduce noise and vibrations.

A special feature of the engine is its compatibility with HVO biofuel (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil). This synthetic diesel fuel is mainly produced from renewable sources such as vegetable oils and is designed to reduce emissions of particulate matter, nitrogen oxides and CO2. Thanks to its low gel point of -32°C, it is also suitable for use in cold temperatures.

Performance and efficiency

In the 320 hp version, the engine delivers a maximum torque of 703 Nm at 2600 rpm. Fuel consumption at full load is stated as 71.9 litres per hour. The 270 hp version achieves a peak torque of 603 Nm, also at 2600 rpm, and consumes 60.6 litres per hour at full load. Weight: 460 kg (engine only).

The Mercury Diesel 4.2L has a fresh water cooling system with heat exchanger that cools the engine, turbocharger, engine oil, transmission oil and power steering. For the ultimate in saltwater protection, Mercury offers SeaCore corrosion protection technology as an option.

Generator with 110 amps

The engine is compatible with Mercury's Next Gen DTS (Digital Throttle and Shift) control technology and the JPS Precision Joystick system. This enables precise control of the boat, especially at slow speeds and when mooring. The on-board electronics are powered by an alternator with a peak output of 110 amps.

Mercury offers the 4.2 litre diesel both for sterndrives and as a built-in engine. It can be combined with various MerCruiser Bravo drives or ZF transmissions. The engine will be available in the EU from March 2025.
