Wakeboarders and surfers are always on the lookout for the "perfect wave": Volvo Penta's new "Forward Drive" is designed to help them create it

Sure, Königsallee has something, but Ocean Drive is simply the better location. At least in February. Do you think that's good for Volvo Penta the reason was to use his new boat drive during theMiami Boat Show and not present it at boot in Düsseldorf? Hardly.

The Forward Drive (FWD) was primarily developed for boat hulls that generate individual waveforms. Exactly the right ones forWater skiing, wakeboarding and wakesurfing. And where are the lion's share of the matching boats built? Correct answer: in the USA. So much for D'dorf and/or Miami.

For those who don't know, Volvo Penta builtthe first Z-drive (1959), the first Z-drive with duoprop (1982) and the first Inboard Performance System (IPS) in 2004. The FWD is a mix of all three, creating a new class. Its manufacturer promises enormous speed, excellent acceleration, outstanding manoeuvrability and low fuel consumption.

The BOOTE testers will (hopefully soon) literally "experience" the statement that the FWD equipped with traction propellers is clearly superior to the conventional drive with reversing gear and shaft favoured by the board artists to date. The fact that the FWD in direct comparisonbetter handlingless vibration and a lower noise level can be assumed due to the design.

On the plus side of the new model are the kick-up quickly system andPredetermined breaking pointwhich are designed to protect the drive from major damage in the event of an accident, power trim, power steering and three different gear ratios. These are needed if the torque of the eight-cylinder engines is to be optimally converted into thrust.

Whether the fiveV-8 petrol engineThe question as to whether or not engines that impress with their large displacement (5000-6000 cc) and plenty of horsepower (300-430 hp) belong to the real "clean men" depends to a large extent on whether the customer opts for the catalytic converter version of their engine. Sounds good - doesn't it? It's a pity that the FWD is only available in North America for the time being. If you want it, you have to buy a boat made in the USA.

Volvo Penta promises that this is versatile in any case: wakesurfing, diving or fishing are no problem. It is regrettable that Volvo Penta's sales management responded to questions about diesel alternatives,Dual motorisations and the possibility of simply replacing the drive on a used boat has only one answer: "No plans at this time". So there are currently no plans on these points. By the way: Volvo Penta in Kiel will not comment on our suspicion that the upper part of the FWD could be an old acquaintance (Duoprop Z-drive).
