Volvo Penta introduces joystick surfing for boats with a twin forward drive. This new technology in the wake boat segment provides the ideal surfing experience behind the boat. It is based on joystick driving technology. Introduced in 2023, this function enables complete boat control without a steering wheel and throttle, allowing precise manoeuvring with just one hand.
Now Volvo Penta is integrating this technology into wake boats equipped with the Twin Forward Drive (with petrol engines) and the Watersports Control Display. Joystick Surfing is easy to use: boaters select their favourite surfing profile on the Control Display and activate the joystick to start sailing. This function improves manoeuvrability at low speeds, while wake surfers can enjoy the perfect wave. In addition, Joystick Surfing offers steering and throttle control even at higher speeds.
A particular focus is on comfort and safety. The joystick can be installed on the armrest of the driver's seat, which ensures a comfortable driving position and high operating comfort over longer periods of time. Intelligent functions such as the automatic return of the joystick to the neutral position when released in reverse gear contribute to a high level of safety.
The Forward Drive (FWD) was primarily developed for boat hulls that produce individual wave shapes. Just right for wakeboarding and wakesurfing. The lion's share of the matching boats are built in the USA.
For those who don't know, Volvo Penta launched the first sterndrive in 1959, the first sterndrive with duoprop in 1982 and the first Inboard Performance System (IPS) in 2004. The FWD is a mix of all three, creating a new class. Its manufacturer promises enormous speed, excellent acceleration, outstanding manoeuvrability and low fuel consumption.
