A comparison of outboards: They have one thing in common - 40 hp. But what is the difference between Tohatsu, Evinrude, Mercury, Honda, Yamaha and Suzuki?

Development work costs money. This is why the principle of "make two out of one" has always applied in the design offices of engine manufacturers. Or better yet, three or four. Although the days of big swaps, when engines from different manufacturers often differed only in terms of their paintwork and name, are over, you still have to look for genuine "one-offs" with a magnifying glass.

If it weren't for Mariner's twin with a silver bonnet, Mercury's black F40 EFI (Electronic Fuel Injection) would be such a rare specimen. The 747 cc three-cylinder engine with overhead camshaft and two-valve technology has neither a little brother nor a big brother.

This is different at Suzuki. Here, design features and components such as 3 cylinders in series, 815 cc displacement, four-valve technology, two overhead camshafts and water-cooled multi-point injection can be found in both the DF40 and the 50 hp DF50. As is so often the case, the secret of the power increase lies in the modified valve timing, the electronics and the higher full-load engine speed.
