Plus fifty: Mercury now also presents a leisure version of the F350's 400 hp doppelganger

Big boats need big engines.

"The introduction of the new 400hp Verado is another step in the evolution of the L6SC platform, which has been very successful in the market to date and which we expect to continue to be so in the years to come," says John Pfeifer, President of Mercury Marine.

Anyone who thought the era of the Supercharger Verado was over was wrong. Their weight advantage will allow them to survive into the future. The two power packs are based on a turbocharged in-line six-cylinder engine with a displacement of 2.6 litres. The supercharger technology is powerful and saves weight.

The new F400 is by far the lightest engine in its class. The advantages of the "lean line" are noticeable at the latest when accelerating and at top speed. The F400 accelerates swiftly, with intercooling, four-valve technology and electronic engine management ensuring that it does not mutate into a "boozer".

In the search for similarities, the "family researcher" will find them at (almost) every turn when it comes to design and specifications. The new F400 Verado has the same equipment features as the F350 and is also offered in the same model variants as its "little brother", which has been a bestseller in its performance class for four years.

If you want to achieve this goal, you need to be versatile and offer a high level of safety and comfort. This means the Verado brothers: Electro-hydraulic power steering and digital gear shifting are always standard; joystick control and counter-rotation (counter-rotating gears) for twin-engine systems, which make manoeuvring child's play when perfectly combined, are an extra.

A must-have in this performance class are the three different shaft lengths, L (508 mm), XL (635 mm) and XXL (762 mm), which make the hull designer's work easier, stainless steel propellers and a three-year warranty. One for all is Mercury's Active Trim, which allows the skipper to programme the power trim and activate it at the touch of a button.

A tip for insiders: Mercury Racing will continue to offer the "predecessor" of the F400, the extremely sporty 400R Verado with gearboxes designed for speeds of over 67 knots.
