Five different outboards from the 75 to 80 hp class have to prove their skills in terms of consumption, smooth running and acceleration.

Every year again: BOOTE invites you to the outboard comparison test, this time for the 75/80cc outboards, which are used on cabin and sports boats in the 5 to 6 metre class as well as on larger inflatable boats with a fixed hull. We have not yet carried out a test in this class - reason enough to do so now. Evinrude, Honda, Mercury, Suzuki and Yamaha accepted our "invitation". Unfortunately, the new Tohatsu outboard was not yet available at the time of the test and was therefore unable to take part.

All outboard motor tests start with the search for a boat that "everyone can handle". In this case, the Atlantic Marine 530 Open proved to be "everyone's darling". Its transom can be equipped with a maximum of 100 hp and is ideally suited for our test of 75-80 hp long-shaft outboards. We carried out the engine and boat test in Neustadt on the Baltic Sea at the Kunya shipyard. A new testing ground that we quickly adapted to.

The alphabetical list includes BombardiersEvinrude E75 the only two-stroke engine in pole position in the test. The E75 inherited the 1295 cc "small" three-cylinder block and the "slim line", which makes it a lightweight in this test, from its big brothers. The capital letter "E" in the model designation stands for E-Tec, which in turn represents a concept that is unique to date.

Two-stroke engines with electronically controlled sequential direct injection are actually nothing new. What is new and now also proven is the interplay between electronics and mechanical design. The latter is characterised in E-Tec engines by particularly high stability in the engine block and underwater section, which means that maintenance intervals can be extended to 36 months. When winter arrives, you switch on the ignition, pull the warm-up lever, set the gear lever to "forward" to full throttle and the engine starts a preservation programme by itself.

When the engine wakes up from hibernation, it automatically adjusts the fuel mixture and oil dosage to the new situation. When and how much fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber in several small injections is determined by the control electronics, which are also responsible for the ignition fireworks lasting a few milliseconds. Incidentally, without "pyrotechnics", i.e. with just one spark, the lean fuel-air mixture could not be ignited.
