Mercury has opted for a completely new design: the new 150 hp four-stroke outboard from the Americans does not need a supercharger at all.

The Mercury 150 FourStroke is designed to appeal to boat owners who do not want a two-stroke engine and cannot decide in favour of a Verado. It has four cylinders arranged in series. It draws its power from the 3-litre displacement. The valve control of the total of eight valves, or two per cylinder, is handled by an overhead camshaft.

The full-load speed range of the 150 hp engine is between 5000 and 6000 rpm. The mixture preparation is regulated by the electrical system, which Mercury calls EFI (Electronic Fuel Injection) and Smart Craft ECM. Paired with Multi Port (one injection valve per cylinder), the engine is said to be very economical. To ensure problem-free operation of the outboard, Mercury specifies the use of fuels with at least 91 octane.

In Germany, this corresponds to normal petrol. Skippers who want to run on E10 fuel can do so, but should follow the engine manufacturer's instructions (see BOOTE 5/11). With a shaft length of 508 mm or optionally 636 mm, installation becomes a "standard matter".

Load change: The new 150 hp Mercury is equipped by the technicians with a 60 A alternator. Brunswick gives the dry weight for the long shaft version as 206 kg - the extra long shaft version weighs 5 kg more. The 1.92:1 reduction gear takes care of converting the power into movement. The price for the long-shaft version is €16,250 and €16,700 for the extra-long-shaft version.
