The days of superchargers are not over," says Mercury Product Manager Jussi Sepponen. But there will be noticeably fewer supercharged Verado engines, as Mercury is replacing the luxury class with V6 and V8 engines without supercharging. Why this upheaval?
The new engines are said to be more economical, quieter and have less vibration than their turbocharged older counterparts. Special features are the low noise level and good running behaviour at the upper engine speeds. The new high-capacity engines are also on a par with their turbocharged counterparts in terms of acceleration.
So why did they launch the supercharged Verados on the market a good ten years ago and not these larger-displacement engines straight away?
"We simply weren't ready to build these light and compact V6 and V8 engines back then and were able to offer the lightest and most powerful engine in its class with the setup of the Verado."says Jussi Sepponen.
We already presented the new V6 engines - in the 175, 200 and 225 hp power class - in BOOTE 5/18. Dieter Wanke drove two 200-series engines on a Boston Whaler at the boat show in Miami/Florida.
The European presentation of the engines took place in Italy on Lake Maggiore. However, the Americans also brought their absolute top-of-the-range, the new V8 outboards, to this event. ...
