The Microsoft co-founder succumbed to cancer in his home town of Seattle. His Explorer fleet consisted of the 92-metre Nobiskrug "Tatoosh" and the 126-metre Lürssen "Octopus", which Allen used for deep-sea research.

Paul Allen founded Microsoft in 1975 with his childhood friend Bill Gates and left the software company after just eight years as the inventor of the computer mouse, among other things - and remained a Microsoft shareholder. By this time, doctors had already diagnosed him with lymphatic cancer. Allen then became involved in charity work and invested in science projects such as the "Space Ship One". With "Octopus", he discovered the wreck of the Second World War battleship "Musashi" off the Philippines in 2015 and supported an expedition to recover the bell of the "HMS Hood". A submarine, 20-metre tender, two helicopters in the hangar and a Cessna 206 are stored on the world's largest explorer at 126 metres. Allen hit the headlines with "Tatoosh" in 2016 when the anchor chain of his Kush explorer tore open a reef off the Cayman Islands. Years ago, Paul Allen became part of a campaign launched by Bill Gates and Warren Buffett in 2010, which obliges supporters to donate at least half of their fortune to charity.
