For many boaters, the solar eclipse in Mallorca was, above all, an event to be experienced on the water. Shortly after 8.30 pm on 12 August, it reached its total phase, whilst numerous pleasure craft and excursion boats were positioned in the Bay of Palma. The expanse of water presented an unusual sight. However, particular attention was focused on the subsequent return journey to the harbours.

The crowds outside Palma shifted out onto the water for the solar eclipse
The most sought-after vantage points were not limited to the beaches. Many visitors booked excursion boats and catamarans, which, according to the Balearic Association of Nautical Companies, were already operating at near full capacity even before the event. On the water, activity was concentrated in the Bay of Palma, El Arenal and the waters off Cabo Blanco.
Even before the event began, the return journey was considered the most challenging phase. As darkness fell, numerous boats set course for their home ports almost simultaneously. The authorities had provided additional patrol boats and called for a staggered return journey. Cala Pi: Eight people rescued from burning boats
The Spanish Huffington Post reports on two boat fires near Cala Pi, in which a total of eight people were rescued. According to the report, the engine room of a pleasure boat caught fire first. Salvamento Marítimo took the three people on board. Fuel is said to have leaked from another boat. Following a deflagration, a fire broke out, prompting three adults and two children to jump into the water. Rescue services brought all five to safety. No serious injuries were reported. Cala Pi is situated south-east of the Bay of Palma in the municipality of Llucmajor.
