Which boats are the typical entry-level models? The focus is usually on smaller, open sports boats that can be used to explore the waters. These boats should also be suitable for many water sports activities - water skiing, swimming, fishing or diving. Our test boat, the Atlantic Marine Open 490, is just such a compact all-rounder.
The "490" in the name suggests that it is almost 5 metres long, while "Open" stands for an open foredeck with a seating area that can be converted into a sun lounger. A centre console with bench seat, two individual seats behind it and the split bathing platform with ladder are located aft. The boat and equipment weigh around 550 kg. The weight of the outboard motor is then added to this.
If you don't have a driving licence, you can of course attach an engine up to a maximum of 15 hp to the transom. For licence holders, the yard allows a maximum of 80 hp. We are running the test with a 60 hp Mercury, which weighs a good 110 kg dry, so with oil, petrol and battery it quickly adds up to 200 kg and the total weight of the boat and engine is around 750 kg.
