A scheduled catamaran collided with a sailing boat on the route between the Croatian islands of Brač and Šolta. Four Czech holidaymakers were killed in the incident. It is not yet clear how the collision occurred, and the matter is currently under police investigation.

A tragedy occurred yesterday at around 11.30 am on a busy route in Croatia: a catamaran operating on the regular scheduled service from Split to the island of Vis collided with a sailing boat flying the French flag. At the time of the accident, there were seven guests and a captain on board the yacht. Following the collision, which took place between the islands of Brač and Šolta, the boat sank. All eight passengers fell into the water following the force of the impact.

Several people killed in a ship collision

Three people died at the scene of the accident, and rescue workers were still searching for a fourth person as of today. Initial media reports suggest that the missing person has been found in the sunken wreckage.

According to the Croatian media, the fatalities are dnevnik.hr Czech nationals. Four sailors were rescued alive from the Adriatic Sea and are still receiving medical treatment.

Cause of the accident still unclear

It was initially unclear how the serious shipping accident had occurred. The sailing vessel was apparently under motor power at the time of the accident. The ferry “Krilo Eclipse” is owned by a private company based in Croatia. There were 118 passengers and seven crew members on board. The authorities temporarily suspended ferry services on the route from Split to Vis due to the search operation. Services are scheduled to resume on Monday afternoon.
