A dangerous underwater obstacle has been discovered off Großenbrode: the remains of piles, just 1.5 metres below the surface – and this is a heavily trafficked stretch of water.

Dangerous underwater obstacle off Großenbrode: In the otherwise sufficiently deep waters on the outer side of the Großenbrode pier, the responsible Baltic Sea Waterways and Shipping Authority has reported the remains of piles in the Baltic Sea. At mean water level, these protrude to a depth of just 1.5 metres below the water’s surface.

A busy stretch of road

It remains unclear how this obstacle could have gone unnoticed for so long at this relatively busy spot. The information in the relevant Notice to Mariners (BfS) reported item ( 54°20.8161’N, 011°05.0255’E) is situated just around three cable lengths north-east of the entrance to the Großenbroder Binnensee and is therefore on course for Fehmarnsund.

Großenbrode Charter Base

Großenbrode and its inland lake boast several marinas with permanent and guest moorings. There is also a sizeable fleet of charter yachts. The town, situated in the north-east of Lübeck Bay, is ideally located for sailing trips heading either into Kiel Bay or Mecklenburg Bay. A sea-rescue vessel is also stationed here.

What happens to the danger?

It has not yet been announced whether the remains of the piles can be removed in the short term or whether other measures are planned to ensure the safety of maritime traffic, such as the placement of a buoy to mark a specific hazard.
