Further problems with the bridges over the River Eider: The Friedrichstadt road bridge will be closed for repair work from Wednesday 1 July 2026 to Friday 3 July 2026.

The Friedrichstadt road bridge at Eider kilometre 83.2 will be closed to traffic for three days whilst repair work is carried out. The closure will be in place from Wednesday 1 July 2026 to Friday 3 July 2026. During this period, the bascule bridge can only be crossed when it is closed. The responsible Elbe-North Sea Waterways and Shipping Authority has published a relevant notices to mariners (BfS).

Bridge problems time and again

The bridges over the River Eider have recently been affected by technical problems on a more frequent basis, partly due to the age of the structures. In the summer of 2025, for example, there were operational failures affecting the 140-year-old railway swing bridge between Tönning and Friedrichstadt. The Pahlen bascule bridge, completed in 1960, was cancelled just last week.

In 2027, the Eider Bridge at Tönning is due to undergo a complete refurbishment, which is expected to take up to three years. Whilst the bridge will then be completely closed to road traffic, shipping is also likely to be affected by the works.

Christian Tiedt was born in Hamburg in 1975, but grew up in the northern suburbs of the city - except for numerous visits to the harbor, North Sea and Baltic Sea, but without direct access to water sports for a long time. His first adventures then took place on dry land: With the classics from Chichester, Slocum and Co. After completing his vocational training, his studies finally gave him the opportunity (in terms of time) to get active on the water - and to obtain the relevant licenses. First with cruising and then, when he joined BOOTE in 2004, with motorboats of all kinds. In the meantime, Christian has been able to get to know almost all of Europe (and some more distant destinations) on his own keel and prefers to share his adventures and experiences as head of the travel department for YACHT and BOOTE in cruise reports.
