Hardly any other trip in the Netherlands is as varied as the tour around Noord-Holland: from IJmuiden via Amsterdam to the Markermeer and on to the IJsselmeer, then through the Afsluitdijk to the Waddeneilanden and finally back south along the North Sea coast. What you need: a few weeks' time.
The trip around the province of Noord-Holland also offers many different nautical aspects: In the North Zeekanaal and further across the Markermeer and IJsselmeer, it is inland navigation, even if the waves and expanse on the IJsselmeer sometimes make you forget that. In the Waddenzee, the tides play their part.
The landscape and towns on the islands also form exciting contrasts to the mainland coast further south with its historic harbour towns. Depending on the weather, the open North Sea then presents its own challenges. The trip is also a good test of your own seamanship!
Staging points included IJmuiden, Amsterdam, Enkhuizen, Makkum, Vlieland, Terschelling, Harlingen, Oudeschild on Texel and Scheveningen. You can find the individual articles on the entire cruise here:
