A new jetty for pleasure craft and houseboats has opened at the Saarschleife this week. Just in time for the Whitsun weekend, the hire of five motorboats and five pedal boats will start here. The new jetty, which was officially opened on Tuesday 14 May, is located on the left bank of the river near Dreisbach, between the Welles ferry and the Saarschleifenlodge. The bright blue, 37 metre long and 4.50 metre wide jetty offers space for six houseboats and motorboats, six small motorboats and five pedal boats.

Travelling along the Saar Loop by boat - for many Saarlanders and tourists, this is the highlight of a visit to the Saarland landmark. Until now, most people have used the ferry or taken an excursion boat. But now you can also explore the water loop individually on motorboats, houseboats or small pedal boats. The motorboats, which only travel at around 16 km/h, can take you comfortably as far as the Mettlach lock or Merzig.

Revitalisation of boat tourism on the Saar Loop

The company that built the new jetty is based in Merzig and already operates a boat hire business there. The aim is to revitalise boat tourism on the Saar Loop. Back in the 1960s and 1970s, the Saarschleife was a popular holiday and excursion destination for tourists and locals alike. Now river tourism is set to experience a renaissance at what is probably the most famous place in Saarland.

For the operating company Delphin Tec Schiffstechnik GmbH, the new location is an expansion of its offering on the Saar after Joylife Boats with its hire centre in Mettlach and Linssen Yachten with its charter base in Merzig. The local authorities and the tourism centre naturally backed the project from the outset: "We are delighted with the investment that the two entrepreneurs are making to make the Saar more attractive," said District Administrator Daniela Schlegel-Friedrich at the inauguration ceremony, which included words of welcome from politicians and authorities as well as maiden voyages on the boats.
