The lock, which was built between 1999 and 2001, is normally available as a self-service lock during the summer months. Pleasure boaters can operate the structure themselves. During the closure, the parallel large shipping lock remains open for commercial shipping. Pleasure craft may also use the GSS during regular opening hours. The work on the rotary segment gate requires the structure to be completely drained.
How do you actually lock properly? We explain step by step what you should consider before locking with pleasure craft or commercial shipping:
The lock is being repaired in several stages. First of all, the area around the heads is insulated with dam beams inserted by a mobile crane. Pumps are used to drain the entire structure with the gate closures. The technicians then carry out cleaning and repair work on the rotating segment gate in the head. The work includes the inspection and replacement of wearing parts. This includes the bearing constructions and rubber seals of the gate closures. These components are subject to natural wear and tear due to regular operation and must be replaced at specified intervals.
The large navigation lock is available as an alternative during the entire closure period. Pleasure boaters can use the GSS during operating hours. The lock is primarily used for commercial shipping, but also allows smaller vessels to pass. The WSA Weser-Jade-North Sea as a public service provider, performs the tasks of the Waterways and Shipping Administration for the Federal Ministry of Transport. The region's waterways and the associated structures, which are affected by storm surges, high water and tides, are provided, maintained and monitored by the WSA for shipping traffic. The office thus serves the safe, cost-effective and environmentally friendly transport system of waterways and ships.
