Denmark: One less landmark – the tallest chimney on the North Sea coast has been dismantled

In Esbjerg, Denmark’s tallest chimney, standing at 250 metres, is currently being dismantled in a complex process. Since it was built, it has served as a striking and reliable landmark for sailors on the North Sea.
That is now a thing of the past. The structure is currently being dismantled piece by piece from a suitably tall scaffold in a complex process.
The background to this is the decommissioning of the coal-fired power station on 31 August 2024. Since then, the tower has stood unused. The building materials from which it was constructed, are now to be recycled.
Esbjerg is an important port of call on the North Sea coast for pleasure craft. The town offers good facilities for restocking and a newly built marina. Of interest to architecture enthusiasts: The harbour building, constructed from timber, was awarded the Danish Wood Award in 2023.
