The land between the Ems and the IJsselmeer is by no means as flat and monotonous as one might fear after a cursory glance at a map. On the contrary, it is a culturally and historically extraordinarily interesting and geographically diverse and varied region.

With a waterway network of around 1300 kilometres and more than 30 lakes and recreational areas, the province of Friesland is a unique water sports area. The tide-free waterways and the large and small lakes offer a wide range of opportunities for both longer summer cruises and short holidays. Moorings can be found in the countryside or in one of the many marinas and yacht harbours, where there are plenty of leisure activities and a friendly atmosphere to tempt you to stay. You can often moor up in the middle of the small historic harbour and trading towns and picturesque fishing villages with their beautifully restored houses and forget the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

This guide to inland waterways, now in its 4th, revised edition, presents the numerous interconnected lakes, rivers and canals of the varied inland area of Friesland, which also runs through the provinces of Groningen, Drenthe and Overijssel. The route through the Veen ("the Veenfahrt"), from the Haren-Rütenbrock Canal to Meppel, and the trip from Winschoter Diep to Stadskanaal are new additions. This book offers the water hiker all the information on routes, harbours, marinas and surroundings in the usual clear and concise form.
