Strict rules still apply at the "Cossi" near Leipzig: Anyone who wants to use a motorised boat needs a special individual permit. With the so-called determination of completion, the state directorate wanted to end this practice and open up the northern part of the lake to all motorised boats in general. As long as the objection of the "Eco-lions" the planned opening of the lake remains blocked for the time being. Boaters will therefore still have to go through the bureaucratic process of checking individual cases.
The environmental organisation justifies its opposition with the high level of pollution for Lake Cospuden. According to a report by the environmental network Federation-Leipzig there are already 135 motorboats on the water. A general authorisation for recreational boating could bring even more boats onto the water. According to critics, this not only overburdens the ecology of the lake but could also lead to conflicts with sailors and swimmers.
From the point of view of the Saxony State Directorate, the lake is a public asset that should be accessible to everyone. The aim is to end the current granting of special rights and make the lake accessible to all citizens. Nature conservation is already sufficiently protected by the existing conservation area in the south.
The State Directorate of Saxony currently sees no legal basis for a blanket exclusion of combustion engines in the remaining area of the lake. Instead, an end to the previous individual case reviews should provide the necessary legal certainty and at the same time reduce the bureaucratic burden.
The situation at Lake Cospuden remains unchanged for the time being. As it will still take time for the objection to be examined, it is unlikely that the lake will be opened to all motorboats soon. Anyone who does not have a special licence will therefore still not be allowed to launch their boat. The ongoing proceedings will now show how nature conservation and free access to the lake can be legally reconciled. Until then, the old rules apply on the "Cossi".
