Territory: Flensburg Fjord - The Blue Border
Flensburg Fjord
A variety of harbours and shore excursions await you on both banks of the fjord: Our overview shows where guests can stay on their own keel and what else awaits them

The beacons

The fairways of the Flensburg Fjord (Danish:Flensborg Fjord) are labelled throughout with leading and leading lights. When approaching from the sea at night, the following lights with their coloured sectors are particularly important:Gammel Pøl in the south-east of Als (Oc (3) WRG. 15s, 20m, 11/8M),Kegnæs at the eastern end of the peninsula of the same name(Oc. WRG. 5s, 32m, 12/9M) andLime base on its sea position north of the reef of the same name(Iso. WRG. 8s, 22m, 14-12M, Horn Mo(FS) 30s)and further on the tower on the peninsulaHolnis (Iso. WRG. 6s, 32m, 13-10M). The Falshöft lighthouse, on the other hand, is now just a landmark, its fire extinguished.

Geltinger Bay

There are two well-protected marinas in the south of the bay:Wackerballig, whose jetty is 250 metres off the coast and can only be reached via a wooden bridge from the beach, which evokes the "island experience"(www.jachthafen-wackerballig.com), www.jachthafen-wackerballig.com ), andGelting-Mole, which is located directly on the shore, but offers many services as a certified four-star marina.www.sporthafen-gelting-mole.de

Langballigau

The Langballigau district harbour, which is also home to a number of fishermen, is a very cosy place surrounded by greenery, with a café-restaurant and nearby beach. If you're lucky, you can even get your fresh catch straight from the boat. www.im-jaich.de

Showers

North of the Holnis peninsula, even pleasure craft must keep to the buoyed fairway: West ofIlluminated post "6" the water depth is less than one metre. Incidentally, until a few years ago there was a light buoy at this point, which was called the "mother-in-law" - if you cut it, you would run aground. On the west side of the peninsula is the marina ofShowerswhere guest yachtsmen are also welcome at Club Nautic. By the way: you can't moor further north than here at 54° 51' 5 N along the German Baltic coast ... www.club-nautic.de

Glücksburg

The spacious and beautifully situated marina is the base of the Flensburg Sailing Club and the Hanseatic Yacht School and offers a full range of services(www.fsc.de). www.fsc.de ). It is also the best starting point for an excursion to theGlücksburg moated castle, which, with its striking four corner towers, is one of the most important magnificent Renaissance buildings in Northern Europe. Guided tours take place daily at 2 pm from July to August. The grounds also include the castle park and rose garden. www.schloss-gluecksburg.de

Fahrensodde

Large marina of the Flensborg Yacht Club and the Flensburg Sailing Association in a quiet location ( www.seglervereinigung.de ). Both Glücksburg, seven kilometres away, and Flensburg (six kilometres) can be easily reached from here by on-board bike.

Sonwik

A complete upmarket residential area has been created on the former naval site next to the marina - harbour promenade included. The flair is much more urban, and the three kilometres to Flensburg city centre can be easily covered in ten minutes on the number 5 bus. Incidentally, the marina's range of services leaves nothing to be desired. www.sonwik.de

Flensburg

There are a number of harbours in the fjord city that have guest berths, but the most central is the city harbour, which is run by the company "im jaich" on the east bank ( www.im-jaich.de ). The cosy restaurant "Heimathafen Flensburg" right on the jetty serves "southern German cuisine with the best from here", the colourful menu ranges from crab soup to cheese spaetzle ( www.heimathafen-flensburg.de ). However, it is also only a few minutes' walk to the city centre with its numerous other restaurants. Afterwards, the shore excursion may take you to the Maritime Museum and the museum shipyard ( www.museumswerft.de ), where you can experience old boatbuilding crafts live.

The Ox Islands

Store Okseø and its even smaller, uninhabited neighbour are the only islands in the Flensburg Fjord. Nevertheless, there is a ferry landing stage, a nice pub and around 30 berths for guests on floating and mooring jetties. www.ochseninseln.de

Nybøl Nor

Passing under the bascule bridge at Egernsund, you can reach Nybøl Nor, an idyllic inland lake connected to the fjord, from Rinkenæs Bay. Moorings are available at Marina Fiskenæs in Gråsten ( enjoyresorts.dk/enjoy-resorts-marina-fiskenaes ). Gråsten Slot, about one kilometre to the north, is the summer residence of the Danish queen.

Marina Minde

This well-equipped marina with beach and holiday complex is located on the Danish side opposite the Holnis peninsula. A good starting point for a trip to Broager, four kilometres away. www.marinaminde.com

In the south and east of Skåne, there are never more than 15 nautical miles between the individual harbours. In the picture: Kivik.

Broager

is the only village in Denmark with a twin-towered church. The interior is decorated with lime paintings, the oldest motifs of which are said to date back to around 1200.

Dybbøl

stands for a dark chapter in the history of both countries. In 1864, the decisive battle in the German-Danish War took place at Düppeler Schanzen, which ended with the defeat of the Danes. An exhibition recalls the bloody events of those days, and a walk along the ridge with a sweeping view over the fjord is a good way to reflect on the past. www.1864.dk

Sønderborg

at the southern exit of Alssund is actually a must on every fjord cruise: guests have the choice between the wall in Sydhavnen between the bascule bridge and the castle (quickly occupied in summer) and the marina a little outside ( www.soenderborg-lystbaadehavn.dk ). With several supermarkets, the supply situation is good, and those who are not afraid of the higher prices can also try out one of the many restaurants. Our tip is the "Ox-En Steakhouse" right by the harbour. The regional museum of the South Jutland region is housed in the castle ( www.museum-sonderjylland.dk ), the distance to the Düppeler Schanzen on the east bank is just under four kilometres.

Right of way on the fjord

The course of the boundary in the Flensburg Fjord means that the fairway from the pair of buoys "1"/"2" to the pair of buoys "13"/"14" - i.e. from the seaward approach to just before Flensburg - is not considered a "fairway within the meaning of the Seeschifffahrtsstraßen-Ordnung" - although there is lateral buoyage throughout. Instead, the International Regulations for the Prevention of Collisions apply almost exclusively on the entire fjord. To be precise, it is Rule 9 of the COLREGs that applies to narrow fairways. www.elwis.de
