1 Boltenhagen
Pretty seaside resorts adorn the Baltic coast of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern like a string of pearls. It starts in the west with Boltenhagen: a fine beach stretches along both sides of the pier, while hotels and restaurants beckon behind the promenade. If you come on your own keel, you can moor in Weiße Wiek, two kilometres away. www.boltenhagen.m-vp.de
2 Yachtwelt Weiße Wiek
Despite the North German name, a little Mediterranean grandeur really does come to mind when you enter the Weiße Wiek: Bright hotel architecture and long jetties characterise the panorama of the elegant five-star marina. Shipyard and yacht service, special boxes for cats, a ViP jetty and, of course, a chic bistro - it's all there! And with 350 berths, there should always be a free spot for unannounced guests. www.yachtwelt.de
3 Hohenwieschendorf
The marina, which is also still young, is not quite as glamorous: The wide concrete pier, from which the floating jetties with around 120 berths extend today, lay fallow for a long time after reunification, and a project with holiday homes and a golf course became an investment grave.
4 Wismar
The old Hanseatic city in the south of the bay is always worth a visit. After all, the beautifully restored old town (together with Stralsund) was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002 as a magnificent showcase of Brick Gothic architecture - no wonder with all its magnificent monuments. Of course, no culinary wishes remain unfulfilled! Close to the city centre, tour skippers can choose between three berths depending on their taste: the Westhafen (www.westhafen.net), the Alter Hafen and the Brunkowkai. www.wismarer.de
5 Timmendorf
The only harbour on the eastern side of the Bay of Wismar is Timmendorf on the island of Poel - with the exception of Rerik (see below). There are moorings in pile boxes along the northern stone pier, but the nearby beach is more than busy on hot days. No wonder: there are only two of them on the whole island. www.insel-poel.de/haefen
6 Kirchdorf
The interior of Poel offers a contrasting programme to Timmendorf: greenery instead of beaches, but with freshly caught fish straight from the cutter and nice restaurants.
7 Rerik
If it weren't for the Wustrow peninsula with its slender swan neck, Rerik would lie directly on the Baltic Sea; however, the harbour of the fishing and holiday resort is well protected in the furthest corner of the Salzhaff, and beachgoers still only have a few steps from the ship before they can dig their toes into the warm sand! There are good catering facilities and a medieval brick church worth seeing in the village. Moorings with pile boxes are available at the jetties of the water hiking rest area and the Alt Gaarz sailing club. www.svag-rerik.de
8 Buk lighthouse
The tower, which is only around 20 metres high, is deceptive: in fact, the brick building, which was inaugurated in 1878, is Germany's topographically highest sea mark with a height of fire of 95 metres. A popular excursion destination with a beautiful view over the Bay of Wismar. It is around eight kilometres to Kühlungsborn.
9 Kühlungsborn
Kühlungsborn borders the bay of Wismar to the east, while the nearest harbour is Warnemünde, ten nautical miles away. With its 400 berths behind solid stone piers, the seaside resort's marina offers plenty of space and good protection from wind and waves. When the sun is shining, you can of course head to the beach bar on the promenade or to the beach, which is also right next door. www.kuehlungsborn-bootshafen.de
