Plotter in Practice
Chartplotters can make navigation considerably easier – provided their displays are interpreted correctly and used effectively. They provide position, course and speed in real time, calculate arrival times, issue warnings and, if desired, even suggest complete routes. However, in practice, it is precisely this wealth of data that often raises questions: What exactly do the various displays mean? What information is really important for safe navigation? And what are the limitations of electronic navigation?

Webinar content:

In this webinar, yachting expert and navigation specialist Sven M. Rutter explains key concepts for the safe and practical use of modern chartplotters – regardless of the manufacturer or model. The focus is not on individual menus or operating procedures, but on understanding the navigation data displayed and how to make effective use of it in practice.

Among other things, the following topics are covered and explained using practical examples:

  • What information does a modern chart plotter provide – and how should it be interpreted?
  • In practice, what are the advantages of planning a route in advance as opposed to simply ‘letting the device lead the way’?
  • What do abbreviations such as BRG, SOG, DTK, XTE, ETA and TTG stand for?
  • How do HDG, COG, BRG and DTK differ – and what conclusions can be drawn from these differences?
  • What should you bear in mind when working with standard electronic nautical charts?
  • What are the technical limitations, for example with regard to the auto-routing function?
  • Common mistakes and useful plausibility checks – and why even the most advanced technology cannot replace a sound grounding in the fundamentals of navigation

The webinar is aimed at both beginners and experienced skippers who wish to deepen their knowledge and make their electronic navigation safer and more efficient.

Sven M. Rutter has been working for many years as an independent consultant, specialist journalist, author and speaker in the field of electronic navigation.
