The first part is entitled ‘Recognising hazards and taking the right action’. It focuses on the basic rules of conduct in maritime traffic. Particularly in situations that cannot be resolved by a single specific rule, these rules provide the decisive guidelines. The frequently discussed discrepancy between theory and practice when giving way in accordance with the KVR is also addressed. And we explain why there is no right of way under the KVR and what this means in practice.
Among other things, the following topics are covered and explained using practical examples:
- Where do the KVR apply?
- Who are the KVR applicable to?
- What are the KVR’s basic requirements for all road users?
- How can I recognise an imminent risk of collision?
- How do I assess the situation correctly?
- When is action required?
- What are the key features of a safe evasive manoeuvre?
- As the party obliged to give way, how should I act?
- When must or may the market maker take action?

The second part of our webinar series on international collision avoidance rules (KVR) focuses on specific avoidance scenarios. How are the roles of the vessels allocated amongst themselves, and what factors determine this in each individual case? What is the order of priority amongst the various categories of vessel, and how do vessels of the same category give way to one another? And what exactly is the ‘no obstruction’ rule, which applies to certain types of vessel and on some bodies of water?
Under the heading ‘Assessing traffic situations and determining roles’, various scenarios are role-played and discussed. And, as in the first part, the focus is on applying the KVR to on-board practice. As the basic rules of the KVR for correct behaviour on the road must always be borne in mind, we recommend booking both parts – although this is not strictly necessary.
Among other things, the following topics are covered and explained using practical examples:
- Which rules on giving way apply in which situations?
- Who has to give way to whom, and why?
- Which vehicle categories does the KVR recognise?
- How is the order of priority between the different categories of vehicles determined?
- How do motorised vehicles give way to one another?

- What special rules apply in narrow waterways and traffic separation zones?
- What are the rules in the event of reduced visibility?
The webinars are aimed at both beginners and experienced skippers who wish to deepen or refresh their knowledge of the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea.
