Would you like to become part of the YACHT and BOOTE editorial teams and turn your passion into a career? Then apply now!
Sailing or motor boating, technology, travelling and testing, social media, video or podcasts - it's all about stories from the water: Delius Klasing is looking for an editor for the water sports team in Hamburg. Anyone who can write, loves boats and is interested in print, online and video will find an exceptional entry into journalism here.

Topics in this article

There are jobs where you write about topics. And there are jobs where you are in the thick of it: on the jetty, on board, at trade fairs, in shipyards, at regattas, on test boats, in harbours, on trips and later at your desk, where experiences become stories.

Delius Klasing is looking for the next possible date for its water sports team in Hamburg a Watersports editor - print & digital - (m/f/d) full-time. The position is also explicitly aimed at young professionals who are keen to not only think journalism in a traditional way, but also to tell stories across many channels: in the magazine, online, in newsletters, on social media, in videos, reels, podcasts and stories.

Water sports are more than summer, harbours and beautiful pictures

When you think of water sports, you might first think of sails in the sunset, fast motorboats or relaxed days in the harbour. In fact, the range of topics is much wider: it's about people, technology, sport, travelling, the environment, safety, innovation and the question of how an entire industry is changing.

Modern yachts are becoming lighter, faster and more digital. Foils are changing the sport of racing. E-drives and new materials are driving the market forward. Navigation, apps, autopilots and on-board electronics are becoming increasingly important. At the same time, classic topics remain relevant: good seamanship, boat maintenance, knowledge of the area, buying a used boat, equipment, weather, harbours and the stories of the people who spend their free time or their lives on the water.

This is an exciting field for journalists. Because hardly any other department combines so many facets: sport, technology, lifestyle, travel, sustainability, community and real practice.

How do you like this article?

Print, online, social: journalism goes multimedia here

At Delius Klasing's Hamburg editorial centre, content is created for strong water sports brands such as YACHT, BOATS and BOATS EXCLUSIVE. These include magazines, websites, digital editions, newsletters, YouTube videos, apps, books and events.

The new position is therefore not just a desk job. We are looking for someone who finds topics, researches, writes, edits, plans, films and has a desire to tell content the way it is read, seen and shared today.

Sometimes a piece of research results in a report for the website. Sometimes a test becomes a big magazine article. Sometimes a topic needs a video, a story or a reel. Sometimes it's about explaining complex technology in a way that makes it understandable. And sometimes a good story simply begins with an encounter on the jetty.

What you can expect

As an editor in the water sports team, you will research and write news, articles, tests and reports about sailing and motor boating. You develop topics, categorise current developments and provide background knowledge in such a way that readers really get something out of it.

This also includes organising content according to priorities and timelines. Because modern journalism doesn't just run on one channel. Topics need to be prioritised for print, website, newsletter and social media. Anyone who enjoys structuring stories and at the same time creatively realising them will find plenty of room here.

An important part of the job is also moving images: videos, stories, reels and other formats for online and social media channels are part of the job. So we are not just looking for a good writer, but someone who wants to take readers and followers out on the water with them.

Who Delius Klasing is looking for

The position is suitable for people who have studied journalism, communication or a comparable subject or have a corresponding qualification. Initial journalistic experience is helpful, but talent, curiosity and a passion for good stories are more important.

Enthusiasm for sailing and motor boating is particularly important. If you have a boating licence such as SBF Binnen or SBF See, you have a clear advantage. An interest in technical subjects is also important, as materials, construction, engines, electronics and equipment play a major role in water sports.

We are looking for someone who understands social networks, enjoys communicating and is not afraid to accompany topics in front of the camera or with a smartphone. In addition, a willingness to travel, a structured way of working, creativity, sociability, team spirit and a very good command of German and English.

In short, this job is for people who want to write, but don't just want to sit at a desk.

Working where water sports journalism is at home

Delius Klasing is one of the leading special interest publishers in Europe. Its portfolio includes magazines such as YACHT, BIKE and TOURand numerous digital editions, books, e-books, special publications and our own events.

For the water sports sector, this means that you work for established brands with a wide reach, an experienced team and direct access to a passionate community. At the same time, there is plenty of room for new formats, digital ideas and young perspectives.

The workplace is located in Hamburg at Gänsemarkt. The position comprises 38 full-time hours per week. In addition, there are modern offices, extensive induction training, further training opportunities, up to two days mobile office per week by arrangement, 30 days holiday, JobRad, a subsidised Germany ticket, company pension contributions, free drinks and other benefits.

Why talents should apply

Watersports journalism is a special field. You don't just write about products, dates or results. You write about freedom, responsibility, technology, nature, performance, adventure and about people who are passionate about their boats, their sport and their areas.

This position is therefore an opportunity for career starters to quickly take on responsibility, develop their own topics and learn the craft of journalism in many formats. Print and digital, text and video, tests and reports, research and social media: Anyone who joins us here gets a broad view of modern special interest journalism.

And perhaps the best thing about it is that many stories don't start in a conference room, but where others spend their free time: on the water.
