From today, the ZDF documentary “Terra X: The Drama Surrounding the Superyacht Bayesian” is available on the streaming platform. The film will be broadcast on ZDF on Sunday 2 August 2026 at 7.30 pm. According to ZDF, the documentary features previously unseen video footage, witness statements and insights into the ongoing investigations.

The documentary centres on the question of why the 56-metre yacht capsized and sank within a matter of minutes. ZDF has announced that experts from the British Marine Accident Investigation Branch and scientists will be featured, amongst others. According to ZDF, Karsten Börner, captain of the neighbouring ‘Sir Robert Baden Powell’, will also be interviewed. His crew rescued survivors following the accident.

The ‘Bayesian’ was a sailing yacht, but the key issues go far beyond sailing. They concern behaviour whilst at anchor, sudden changes in the weather near the coast, night watches, emergency procedures and how quickly a seemingly controlled situation can turn into a distress situation at sea.
There were 22 people on board: twelve guests and ten crew members. Seven people died and 15 survived. The yacht sank off the coast of Sicily during the night of 18–19 August 2024, after the weather and conditions at the anchorage had deteriorated dramatically.

The case has still not been fully resolved. The British safety investigation looked into the sinking with the aim of preventing future accidents. The Italian public prosecutor’s office, on the other hand, is pursuing criminal matters.
