Water sports interests are represented by the Executive Committee, the departments, the Association Council and the boards of the regional associations and clubs. The members in the clubs and regional associations are the main pillars of the association. The association has around 500 member clubs with several thousand individual members who belong to the respective regional associations.

The DMYV is a member of the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB), the Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM) and the European Boating Association (EBA). With regard to the promotion of sport, the association is a non-profit organisation.
