The Swedish tech pioneers from Candela are adding another aspect to their successful electric hydrofoil concept: passenger transport. Thanks to fresh investment capital of almost 19 million euros, the Candela P-12 Shuttle is going into series production. This summer, the pioneering means of local transport is due to start regular service in the Stockholm archipelago.

The company, which has already attracted attention in the sports boat sector with its C 7 and C 8 day cruiser models, is now also promising great things in the commercial sector: with the help of its computer-controlled hydrofoils, the P-12 Shuttle is said to consume 80% less energy than conventional electric boats of a comparable size.

Candela reaches target twice as fast

In this way, the compact 11.99 m long and 8.5 tonne catamaran with its two Candela C-Pods and 180 kWh battery power achieves a range of 60 nm at a cruising speed of 27 knots. Up to 30 passengers can thus reach their destination more than twice as fast as with the diesel-powered ferries previously used on the same route. The top speed is even 30 knots.

The new investment is intended to utilise the potential of our waterways for climate-friendly high-speed local transport. In many cases, the P-12 shuttle will be faster and more cost-effective than land transport, making it profitable for the operator from day one." - Gustav Hasselkog, founder and managing director of Candela

A study by the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm also comes to the same conclusion, that the GRP hydrofoil produces 97.5 % less greenhouse gases over its lifetime than a boat of the same size with an internal combustion engine. This includes production, a service life of 30 years and subsequent recycling.

High market expectations

According to the manufacturer, interest in the P-12 Shuttle is already very high, with "more than 180" enquiries. Candela estimates the international market volume at around 28 billion euros and is talking about a "game changer". All those involved will be all the more excited about the first practical experience gained this summer in the archipelago between Stockholm and Ekerö.

Christian Tiedt was born in Hamburg in 1975, but grew up in the northern suburbs of the city - except for numerous visits to the harbor, North Sea and Baltic Sea, but without direct access to water sports for a long time. His first adventures then took place on dry land: With the classics from Chichester, Slocum and Co. After completing his vocational training, his studies finally gave him the opportunity (in terms of time) to get active on the water - and to obtain the relevant licenses. First with cruising and then, when he joined BOOTE in 2004, with motorboats of all kinds. In the meantime, Christian has been able to get to know almost all of Europe (and some more distant destinations) on his own keel and prefers to share his adventures and experiences as head of the travel department for YACHT and BOOTE in cruise reports.
