She has chic lines and offers a high level of comfort for travelling on her three decks. We tested the Azimut Magellano 60 on the Mediterranean

Azimut has been producing its Magellano series since 2007 and calls these yachts the "crossover of the sea". Boats that have the charm of a trawler for distant destinations, combined with a modern Italian design. According to the shipyard, the hull, a "dual mode semi-planing hull", offers a high level of comfort and fuel efficiency at both fast and slow speeds.

The Magellano is driven either from the saloon driving position or from the outside driving position on the flybridge. From the latter, the driver has a good all-round view and, of course, a great open-air feeling. The instruments, steering, joystick and gearstick are well positioned and easy to read and operate. The driver's seat is comfortable and adjustable, and the skipper can fold up the front section of the seat to drive comfortably while standing. A hardtop towers over around two thirds of the flybridge, in which a softtop is integrated that opens and closes at the touch of a button. There are also spacious and convertible seating areas, a wet bar and an outdoor shower (integrated into the pillar of the roof). Access to the flybridge is via a staircase equipped with sturdy handrails.

The deck as an infinite terrace

The shipyard refers to the cockpit as the "Infinity Terrace", which also features a comfortable large seating/reclining unit with table. Anyone sitting here has an unrestricted view of the water aft, as the stern wall is transparent. The foredeck is also the perfect place to relax in comfort, as there is another huge open-air zone in the bow, over which a bimini can be stretched.

If you want to jump into the water, it's best to do so from the hydraulic bathing platform. Getting back on board is particularly easy using the bathing ladder integrated into the platform. If you want to combine the cockpit and saloon into one huge unit, open the stern door and stern window. The window front separates the fully equipped galley in the saloon - with a kind of counter and two stools in the cockpit. These seats are ideal for enjoying cocktails and snacks.

Light-flooded saloon on the Azimut Magellano 60

The saloon also offers a high level of comfort in the seating areas. The shipyard has installed huge panoramic windows to ensure that the room is generously flooded with light. The cabins and toilets are located one floor below. In the bow is the VIP cabin with a double berth (1.96 x 1.61 m) and direct access to the wet room. On the starboard side, the designer accommodated a further guest cabin with two single berths. Further aft - roughly in the centre of the boat - is the owner's cabin, which is again equipped with a double berth (1.95 x 1.61 m). The en-suite bathroom with direct access goes without saying. The cabin also has a headroom of around 1.96 metres, a bench seat, plenty of storage space and cupboards. Large windows in the side walls ensure that there is always plenty of daylight. In the vestibule of the owner's cabin there is access to another wet room, which can be used as a day toilet. This means that there are three bathrooms in total.

The driving position in the saloon is equipped with a double bench for the driver and co-driver. The instrument panel features an analogue compass as well as modern monitors for navigation and the operating status of the engines. The rudder system, double lever control and joystick are also easy to operate. For mooring manoeuvres, the owner can order an additional "helm station" in the side deck area as an option.

High performance, good location

We sailed the Azimut Magellano 60 on the Mediterranean, which proved to be calm on the test day. She is powered by two MAN diesels (730 hp each) with V-gears. She has trim tabs to ensure that she is always in the optimum position. With the flaps activated (about ½ on the display), the Magellano accelerates into high speed with only a slight bow lift. At full throttle, we reach a speed of 26.4 knots - with a noise level of a good 73 dB(A) (measured at the saloon helm). The shipyard specifies a fast cruising speed of 18 knots, which means that the 3650 litres of diesel minus 15% reserve are sufficient for around 340 nautical miles. If you are travelling slowly, you can even travel almost 880 nautical miles at 8.5 knots.

The hull makes smooth turns in fast bends. Back in the harbour, the skipper moors the boat safely using the joystick system. The engine can be accessed via a hatch in the cockpit floor and ladder. Not only are the engines safely housed down here, but also the generator and a stabilisation system right by the companionway. The installations make a good impression, as does the overall workmanship.

Conclusion on the Azimut Magellano 60

The Azimut Magellano 60 is a chic yacht that is ideal for a wide variety of voyages of discovery. Six people find a pleasant level of comfort on board. The workmanship and installations are of a high standard.
