The Loxo 40 is the further development of the already well-known Loxo 32. Like its smaller sister ship, the 40 is also positioned as an efficient motorboat for skippers who value range and economy without sacrificing performance. With a 480-litre tank and impressively low fuel consumption, the boat is particularly suitable for longer tours and, thanks to CE category B, even on open waters.
The first version of the Loxo 40 is powered by a Yanmar diesel engine with 195 hp (143 kW). Alternatively, smaller and larger engine versions are also available. At a cruising speed of 16 knots (approx. 30 km/h), the boat consumes just 0.8 litres of diesel per nautical mile with the 195 hp engine, according to the shipyard. This corresponds to a consumption of around 12.8 litres per hour - an impressive figure for a boat of this size.
The top speed with this engine is over 20 knots. According to the manufacturer, the Loxo 40 can reach a top speed of around 20 knots with the smaller 150 hp engine (110 kW), while the more powerful 250 hp version (184 kW) can reach speeds of up to 26 knots (approx. 48 km/h). The boat has six berths in three cabins and a wet room.
The combination of efficient hull design, 480-litre tank and low fuel consumption ensures impressive ranges. At a cruising speed of 16 knots, the Loxo 40 can theoretically cover around 600 nautical miles (approx. 1,111 km). If the speed is reduced to 10 knots, the range increases to over 1,000 nautical miles (approx. 1,852 km) - enough for extended coastal tours without frequent refuelling stops.
The consumption values were determined under optimum conditions: light load (empty weight plus 500 kg), calm sea and clean hull. The values may deviate under real conditions with a heavier load or rougher seas. The manufacturer specifies a safety reserve of 30 litres, so that an effective 450 litres are available for calculating the range.
The power delivery of the Yanmar engine is reflected in an almost linear increase in speed in relation to the engine speed. At around 3,000 rpm, the boat already reaches 18 knots, while the top speed is just under 4,000 rpm.
The engine works particularly efficiently in the medium speed range between 2,000 and 3,000 rpm. This is where the Loxo 40 offers the best balance between speed and consumption. Consumption increases disproportionately from around 18 knots, which confirms 16 knots as an economical cruising speed.
Loxo is an offshoot of the well-known French sailboat shipyard Pogo and specialises in efficient, long-distance motorboats. The shipyard places particular emphasis on the fuel efficiency and practical usability of its boats for extended tours.
