Sipa boards
Sipa Boards, a company from Slovenia, has developed an innovative series of stand-up paddle boards (SUPs) with an electric motor. The boards are equipped with a central drive system

The Slovenian company Sipa Boards has developed SUPs with an electric motor. The drive and battery unit sits in the centre of a shaft. It is inserted before inflation and clamps when the board has reached the required pressure. The batteries can be removed for charging through a cover on the top. The jet drive is located at the bottom.

The special feature: the drive is flush with the board. This means there is no risk of injury and no damage can occur if the SUP is pulled onto the beach. The drive is also illuminated. The 5,000 lumen LEDs illuminate the water and seabed in the dark. Up to two energy storage units, each with 180 watt hours, can be used. This should supply the drive with power for up to six hours.

The SUP is not designed for racing, but for enjoyment

The motor is not designed for fast sailing, but for a maximum of 4.5 knots. This should make longer trips or the return journey in a headwind effortless. The drive of the Sipa board is therefore comparable to that of an e-bike. It increases comfort and safety. The control of the electric motor is wireless and can be clipped onto the paddle. As soon as the Bluetooth connection is interrupted (if the paddle is lost, for example), the motor stops. The Drive Tourer Silver (pictured) is self-inflating, measures 11 feet by 32.2 inches and costs €3,300 including the drive.
