There has been a serious accident on the Danube in Lower Bavaria. A water skier lost a leg - he has been missing ever since

A serious accident occurred on the Danube near Obernzell in the district of Passau on Sunday afternoon (20 August). A 55-year-old water skier came into contact with a propeller and lost his leg. The man has been missing ever since.

According to the police, the water sports enthusiast was pulled by a motorboat that his wife was steering. After waterskiing, the man tried to climb back up over the stern of the boat. Unfortunately, he got caught in the propeller of the motorboat, which was still turning. The 55-year-old is said to have lost a leg and then disappeared into the water, according to the police.

Search measures unsuccessful so far

Despite extensive search measures, the missing person has not yet been found. The water police, the German Life Saving Organisation, the water rescue service, the fire brigade and two helicopter crews took part in the search. Shipping traffic on the Danube was interrupted for the duration of the search operation.

The missing man's wife and the other occupants of the boat were looked after by a crisis intervention team. The motorboat was seized. The Passau public prosecutor's office ordered an expert report to clarify the cause of the accident.

The search for the 55-year-old was resumed yesterday. The police are asking witnesses who can provide information about the accident or the whereabouts of the missing man to get in touch.
