Everything in view: the new control centre of the Spree-Havel Waterways and Shipping Authority.
A new control centre for digital control and remote operation was inaugurated in Berlin-Grünau. In future, it will ensure safe traffic on the capital's waterways.

Commercial and pleasure craft share most of Berlin's waterways. The volume of traffic can be considerable, especially during the summer boating season, when not only goods transport and passenger shipping are travelling around Mitte, but also the boats of the numerous clubs and charter companies. The new control centre in Berlin-Grünau has now been inaugurated to ensure safety in the future.

Locks and weirs operated remotely

The new building is located in the east of Berlin on the site of the Spree-Havel Waterways and Shipping Office at the confluence of the Teltow Canal and the Dahme, part of the Spree-Oder waterway. Various hydraulic engineering facilities are now monitored and remotely controlled from the workstations, primarily locks and weirs.

The digitalised functional processes have already been tested in trial operation since January. In the future, a total of 20 WSA employees will operate almost 40 systems from here. The investment volume for the new Berlin-Grünau control centre amounts to around 20 million euros.

Christian Tiedt was born in Hamburg in 1975, but grew up in the northern suburbs of the city - except for numerous visits to the harbor, North Sea and Baltic Sea, but without direct access to water sports for a long time. His first adventures then took place on dry land: With the classics from Chichester, Slocum and Co. After completing his vocational training, his studies finally gave him the opportunity (in terms of time) to get active on the water - and to obtain the relevant licenses. First with cruising and then, when he joined BOOTE in 2004, with motorboats of all kinds. In the meantime, Christian has been able to get to know almost all of Europe (and some more distant destinations) on his own keel and prefers to share his adventures and experiences as head of the travel department for YACHT and BOOTE in cruise reports.
