This interior looks very familiar. Flower-shaped armchairs, high-gloss wood, shimmering accents and, above all, a bold use of pattern and colour on the upholstery and carpets. Studio Bannenberg & Rowell 2021 has left its signature on board the 55.5 metres, a rather small format for Lürssen, but one deliberately chosen by the owner to be compact, and it has done so in a remarkable way. Parallels with "Carinthia VI" are more than intentional. The design by studio founder Jon Bannenberg was delivered in 1973 and unfortunately burnt out completely in 2016.
"Subsequently, both Lürssen and we received numerous requests to rebuild, redesign or reinterpret this icon," reports Simon Rowell, who now runs the studio with Jon's son Dickie Bannenberg. The team began designing contemporary versions: "Our aim was to create a yacht for the modern lifestyle, but one that captures the attitude, proportions and carefully considered geometry of 'Carinthia'."
When their "Moon Sand" customer at the time saw the sketches, the designers put aside the very obvious "Carinthia" ideas and designed something new, "while always retaining a homage to the original inspiration". What also makes the steel-aluminium construction "Moon Sand" interesting as a charter yacht for ten guests is the equipment for the most beautiful weeks of the year. Above all, the aft deck pool with counter-current system and mobile floor, shallow water is particularly appreciated by families with small children. The base of the pool also extends all the way up and is flush with the deck. This means that the pool practically disappears completely and makes room for other activities. "This works extremely well on 'Moon Sand'," says Rowell, "the deck feels huge for the size of the yacht."
Family-friendliness was at the top of the list for the Lürssen. The fact that the five guest cabins are flexible and can be combined into two to four suites also fits in with this claim. Bannenberg & Rowell designs most of its yachts for families. "I think that's why the owners felt comfortable with our personalised approach," says Rowell.
"'Moon Sand' is the third yacht we have designed for them." This time, the duo was commissioned to design both the interior and exterior spaces. A nice feature and typical of Bannenberg & Rowell is the desk in the upper saloon - like much of the furniture, it was designed by Frank Pollaro. The workstation was positioned exactly where it was on the owner's previous yacht. "The desk is positioned so that the owner can work in peace, but still enjoy the view and the feel of the entire yacht," explains Simon Rowell. "We also widened the windows to create a three-sided panorama. A significant improvement on the previous visual axis." If you would like to experience "Moon Sand", she is in Edmiston's charter catalogue and costs around 440,000 euros per week. It can be purchased for 65 million euros.
