The replacement construction of the Kannenburg lock
The newly built Kannenburg lock is complete. The lock in the north of Brandenburg can now be put back into operation following the final acceptance by the building authorities. The Templin waters branching off from the Upper Havel can now be navigated through to Templin again.

From 22.12.2017 to 17.10.2023, the Kannenburg lock at kilometre 3.60 of the Templiner Gewässer was closed to shipping traffic. During this time, the old lock was made safe and the replacement construction was planned according to the latest state of the art.

What was once a manually operated and outdated lock has now become a semi-automatic, remotely monitored self-service lock. From the next recreational boating season, water sports enthusiasts will be able to enjoy the benefits (Edgar Enderlein, Head of the Waterways Department)

The lock was built as a sheet pile wall lock with massive lock heads and is equipped as a user-operated lock in semi-automatic operation with renovated outer harbours, lock operating building and a transfer system. This lock operation is possible thanks to the use of state-of-the-art automation technology.

Due to the importance of the Templin waterways for water tourism, the town of Templin has concluded a public law agreement with the Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration (WSV) for the replacement construction of the Kannenburg lock, which states that the town of Templin has built this lock for the WSV.

The usable dimensions remain unchanged:

  • Usable passage width: 5.40 m
  • Chamber width: 7.00 m
  • Usable chamber length: 41.65 m
