The accident occurred between Ulm-Nord and Merklingen in the direction of Stuttgart near Nellingen. One person was slightly injured and four vehicles were damaged. The total damage is estimated by the police at around 50,000 euros.
The recovery of the boat proved to be complex and took several hours. A seven-kilometre-long traffic jam formed in the direction of Stuttgart, as the motorway had to be completely closed at times.
According to the police, the accident was apparently caused by a sudden lane change by the trailer combination. The driver of a BMW towing the trailer switched from the right-hand lane to the centre lane. However, another vehicle was already in the centre lane. The trailer collided with this car, which in turn crashed into another car.
As a result of the impact, the boat trailer skidded and levered itself out. The eight-metre-long motorboat slipped off the trailer and landed lengthways on the central reservation, which is significantly raised at this point by concrete barriers. The police say it was lucky that the motorboat did not end up in oncoming traffic, which could have led to even more serious consequences. Only a few flying parts caused minor damage to a car travelling on the opposite side.
The motorway had to be completely closed at times for the recovery work. The fire brigade secured the scene of the accident. The motorboat was finally removed from the scene of the accident with a tow truck.
