Now that you have learnt how to measure the trim angle, it is time to adjust the trim bolt.

Smaller outboard motors and old sterndrives are trimmed by hand. To do this, there are three or more holes in the side of the bracket - the motor or drive attachment on the transom - through which a trim bolt is inserted. This holds the motor or drive in the respective position in relation to the mirror. Disadvantage: If the position is to be changed, the motor or Z-drive must be lifted and the bolt moved. This is not always easy without a dinghy or jetty.

The trim bolt must be positioned as follows

If the boat is almost parallel (two to four degrees) to the water surface, everything can remain as it is. If the bow of the boat is in the water, the outboard or sterndrive is trimmed too close to the transom. As a remedy, you should now move the trim bolt hole by hole away from the transom and test drive each time until the correct trim position is found. If the post goes steeply upwards, the motor or Z-drive are trimmed too far. The bolt must now be inserted hole by hole in the direction of the mirror in search of the trim.
