Record: The Candela C-8 was the first electric boat to cross the Baltic Sea
A Swedish team recently set a world record by crossing the Baltic Sea between Stockholm and the Finnish autonomous region of Åland in a hydrofoil Candela C-8 e-boat

It was the first time that an electric boat had crossed the Baltic Sea and successfully made the journey between the two countries. But that wasn't all: the group even returned on the same day, at a whopping 95 per cent lower cost compared to a conventional fossil-fuelled boat.

Gustav Hasselskog, CEO and founder of Candela, emphasised the importance of the voyage in demonstrating that emission-free sea travel is not only possible, but also economically viable. Candela has set a milestone with its innovative technology, which enables an 80 per cent reduction in energy consumption compared to traditional ships.

The record journey was made in the latest version of the Candela C-8 leisure boat, equipped with a Polestar battery. After a stopover in Kapellskär, they reached Marienhamn, the capital of the Åland Islands, and were welcomed by a delegation led by the Prime Minister of Åland, Kristin Sjögren.

This successful journey was largely carried out using the existing charging infrastructure and in collaboration with Kempower, a provider of charging solutions. The manufacturers of the electric boat were delighted with the efficiency and simplicity of the charging process, which also compared favourably with a petrol-powered chase boat.

By breaking down barriers and demonstrating the effectiveness of electric boats, the company is already planning to electrify other shipping networks around the world. This pioneering journey shows that an environmentally friendly and economical future is also possible on the water.
