The compact Coaster 640 SC has dimensions that make it fit perfectly on a trailer. The German dealer Sun Marine Wassersport in Bergkamen recommends a 2500 kg Brenderup trailer. Vans, SUVs and, of course, off-road vehicles and pick-ups are suitable as towing vehicles.
As you can see in the picture above, the test boat has a large seating area with a table in the bow. This seating area can be converted into a sun lounger in no time at all. Another sun lounger can be found in the stern on the port side. There is a cushion for the bathing platform that extends all the way to the stern bench, and the backrest of the bench can simply be folded forwards. A practical solution. However, the entire cushions are on the accessories list and are offered together with the helmsman's seat for 3445 euros.
The bathing ladder mounted on the starboard bathing platform comes as standard and can also be easily folded out from the water. A stern shower is only available for an extra charge, and you also pay for the fridge, the Fusion music system and all kinds of tarpaulin and canopy options. Under the convertible top on our test boat, you have a comfortable standing height of over 2.20 metres. The boat is approved for a total of six people, who can easily be accommodated on board. That could be good friends or family. The list of leisure activities includes discovery tours and relaxed swimming trips, as well as towing inflatable tubes and the like. The towing line can be attached to the sturdy fittings or, even better, to the water ski tow bar, which is available at extra cost.
It is even possible to have two berths in the small cabin under the driving position and foredeck, for which the shipyard offers optional cushions. However, the space is quite limited. The cabin can also be used as a large stowage or toilet room. A chemical toilet can be ordered for the latter. An accessory that makes tour planning noticeably easier.
Where do you sail the boat? With CE category C, it is suitable for both inland waterways and coastal waters. We drove the Coaster 640 SC with a 100 hp Suzuki outboard motor of the latest generation on an inland waterway. With the installed hydraulic steering (extra), the boat can be manoeuvred out of the harbour without any problems, and the subsequent test manoeuvres revealed tight turning circles of between around 1 and 1.5 boat lengths. When reversing from one side to the other, the bow swings round after a delay of around three to four seconds.
At slow forward speeds, the Coaster yaws like a glider and the skipper should only countersteer slightly, if at all, to avoid overshooting the target again. If you push the throttle lever further forwards, the nose rises and lowers again automatically at around 4300 rpm - when the glide speed is reached. During this transition phase, seated riders sometimes have the bow in their field of vision, whereas those who ride standing up have unrestricted foresight.
From around 4500 rpm, the motor-boat combination glides along at a good, stable course, and this speed is also the most economical speed. At 19 knots, a fuel consumption of 0.87 l/sm and a tank capacity of 108 litres, this results in a range of 106 nm plus 15% reserve. If you want to go a little faster, you can also glide at a good 23 knots and only lose 6 nm of range. The Coaster cuts a fine figure during fast manoeuvres and can be steered safely with the smooth steering.
The rider sits on a firmly upholstered bucket seat that offers excellent lateral support. The seat can be adjusted in all directions and offers the option of folding up the front seat cushion, which guarantees plenty of space for upright riding. The steering wheel and gearstick are practically positioned and are easy to operate. The view of the engine instruments is just as good as that of the plotter (Garmin Echomap). The fact that the latter costs extra is not unusual for this size of boat, but we are rather critical of the fact that the analogue compass and the horn are also on the list of accessories.
On the other hand, there is praise for the equipment with an electric and manual bilge pump. In the fuelling system, we like the extra fuel filter and the double screw clamps on the hose connections. The electrical installations are impressive with easily accessible main switches and circuit breakers as well as the firmly lashed batteries (in plastic boxes). The workmanship of the plastic, upholstery and metal is well executed.
+ Safe driving characteristics
+ Good processing quality
+ Petrol filter and easily accessible main switch
+ Electric and manual bilge pump
- Horn and compass are subject to a surcharge
+ Good layout
The Coaster 640 SC is an all-rounder that offers many water sports options. However, the cosy cushions are not standard. With its 100 hp motorisation, it is safe on the water. The workmanship makes a decent impression.
