The Sicilian Saver shipyard specialises in affordable, trailerable sports boats and currently offers four series with a total of 15 models. The Saver 660 Walk Around, which was presented at the Genoa Boat Show in 2019, is one of the entry-level boats in its line, which starts with the 550 WA. The flagship here is the 10 metre long 330 WA. Thanks to its compact dimensions and moderate overall weight, the Saver 660 WA can be towed by vehicles with a towing capacity of at least 1.8 tonnes. Thanks to the cabin, which can also be equipped with a toilet, it is particularly interesting for owners who plan occasional overnight stays in different areas and also want to use their boat in distant holiday destinations. The seating and sunbathing areas on deck are available for up to seven people (according to CE). If you also want weather protection in the cockpit, you can order a camper canopy with side panels. For the test candidate with the basic equipment, 57,540 euros must be saved. Of course, a trailer and the desired options must also be added.
Thanks to the passageway to starboard at the stern, getting on board is very easy. The extensions of the bathing platform, which can be ordered separately, are also helpful. The stern shower with a 50-litre fresh water tank and pressurised water system is part of the standard equipment. Two steps lead down to the cockpit level. Thanks to the 0.66 m high side walls, you feel very safe here even when travelling. An L-shaped seating area with a backrest that takes some getting used to and a table await the crew in the stern. The table can be lowered and fitted with an additional cushion (extra) to create another sun lounger. A double seat is fitted at the helm. The console underneath can accommodate a refrigerator if required. In addition to the engine instruments, a small plotter can also be installed and the compass is part of the standard equipment. Protection from the wind is provided by the acrylic glass windscreen, whose solid stainless steel frame serves as a handhold.
Two steps on the port side lead to the sunbathing cushions on the foredeck, which offer space for two to three people to sunbathe. The standard railing has an exit option via the bow and secures the area well. The cabin is accessed via the acrylic glass sliding door. A V-shaped upholstered bench awaits us here, which can be converted into a sunbathing area by inserting cushions. The standing height of 1.41 metres only allows a stooped posture, while the seat height of just under one metre above the cushion is sufficient. At up to 1.95 metres in width, the resulting reclining area is quite wide and, thanks to its length of 2.10 metres, offers space for two to three people to spend the night. Two hatches in the bow provide ventilation. A chemical or sea toilet can be installed on request, but there is no separate room for this.
Motorisations are possible with outboards up to 110 kW (150 hp). A Mercury F100 EXLPT CT is bolted to the test boat. With a crew of two, we reach a stable planing speed after six seconds at 4000 rpm and 15 knots. We reached the maximum speed of 23 knots at 5250 rpm after a total of 13 seconds.
The most economical way to travel is to reach planing speed. Here, 18.5 litres of fuel run through the fuel line every hour, which, with the standard 160-litre tank, allows a range of 110 nautical miles after deducting 15 percent reserve. The driving performance was also satisfactory with the test engine, but if you want to use the boat regularly with a larger crew or as a towing boat, you should opt for the maximum engine. When manoeuvring slowly, full circles with a diameter of around 1.5 boat lengths are possible and the hull turns directly when steering round. The good directional stability is also praised. Fast full circles with a diameter of around 2.5 boat lengths and a clearly noticeable lean are possible, although cavitation quickly occurs due to the higher mounted engine on the test boat. Good-natured handling and a high feeling of safety are present in all manoeuvres. In terms of safety equipment, it should be mentioned that only an electric bilge pump is installed and not a mechanical pump. Two 1-kg fire extinguishers are also on board. The build quality is good and all assembly work has been carried out neatly.
The Saver 660 WA can be used in a variety of ways. Weekend excursions, fishing trips, use as a towing boat or holiday trips along the coast - everything is possible. Thanks to the overnight accommodation option, even trips lasting several days are possible. The operating costs are manageable and the price-performance ratio is good.
